Wardrobe tips...
I get a lot of questions regarding outfits, especially for family photos with more than just a couple of people. Sometimes it can be a struggle! I, myself, struggle every Fall for my own family photos. It's especially challenging if you take them every year around the same time, because the palettes are often similar based on the time of year, and you don't want every year to look the same! Something to note - this post is mostly referring to family or group photos. These tips may vary for other types of sessions, especially senior or athletic sessions.
I have a few rules of thumb here:
- Neutrals are your best friend (but avoid bright white)
- Avoid logos, wording, or screen tees
- Seasonal colors can really help bring the vibes together
- Shoes matter and should follow similar guidelines to clothing
That being said, as we all know, sometimes rules are meant to be broken. If you have some colors that blend well for the season (Spring and Summer often are more colorful palettes), or you have plaid for the fall, it is okay to bring those out! With colors, my best tip is to not go TOO bright - like neons or bright pinks. Those colors, as well as pure or bright white, can be difficult to balance with other colors, especially in editing. As for plaid or flannel, they're wonderful for fall. A tip there being, only one or two people in plaid, not everyone! Add some complimentary neutrals into that mix to balance out the patterns. The same goes for floral patterns!
Logos or screen tees - very small pocket logos, such as the Nike check mark are subtle and not nearly as distracting. Screen tees... it's best just avoid them altogether. They are usually difficult to match with others and are very distracting. This also goes for shoes, often having logos or neon colors.
